EA Sports Announces NHL 13 Cover Athlete
Can you think of a better way for Electronic Arts (EA) and NHL.com to have announced the EA Sports NHL 13 cover athlete than during the 2012 NHL awards? I can’t either. In arguably one of the closest, down to the wire voting events, Philadelphia Flyers forward Claude Giroux beat out Nashville Predators goalie Pekke Rinne. With nearly 26 million voting fans, the Blackberry sponsored event came down to less than a one percent margin.
“The support fans have given me throughout the campaign has been unbelievable,” said Flyers forward Claude Giroux. “I am very excited to be on the cover of NHL 13 and I want to thank everyone who campaigned and voted for me – especially my teammates, the Flyers organization, and of course all the NHL fans who voted and tweeted.”
“The level of passion that the fans, players, and NHL teams have displayed throughout the first ever EA SPORTS NHL Cover Vote campaign has been overwhelming,” said Dean Richards, General Manager, NHL, EA SPORTS. “The EA SPORTS NHL Franchise has had a rich tradition of outstanding cover athletes and quality games, and we feel privileged to introduce Claude Giroux as the face of NHL 13 as selected by the fans. With Giroux on the cover and our revolutionary new True Performance Skating engine, we feel great about delivering our most innovative title yet with NHL 13.”

The success of the voting campaign beat everyone’s expectation. For the first time (and most likely not the last), fans, teams, and players were able to choose the next face for the cover. With that locked in, EA is redirecting the attention back to gameplay. The introduction of “True Performance Skating” and a new A.I. has brought a long list of improvements which make the “Skill Stick” system from back in NHL ’07 look almost obsolete. EA Sports NHL 13 will be available for Xbox 360, PlayStation, and PC on September 11th, 2012 in North America (September 14th in Europe).
