Dota 2 Will Be Free to Play…”With A Twist”
Recently in a interview with “Seven Day Cooldown” Valve’s CEO Gabe Newell confirmed that Dota 2 will be a FREE to play game…but it will be free with a twist. What Gabe Newell suggested for the free to play model was something along the lines of a community driven content, heres the excerpt
“The issue that we’re struggling with quite a bit is something I’ve sort of talked about before, which is ‘How do you properly value people’s contributions to a community?’” Newell explained. “We’re trying to figure out ways so that people who are more valuable to everybody else, that that’s recognized and accommodated. We all know people where if they’re playing we want to play, and there are other people where if they’re playing we would, like, [rather] be on the other side of the planet.”
“It’s just a question of coming up with mechanisms that recognize and reward people who are doing things that are valuable to other groups of people.”
The interview concludes with him talking about rewarding players who help others, give hints and create stuff for Dota, which is pushing for a more community driven game. This will definitely be something to watch out for, because if this is a successful free to play model that still makes a profit, it could lead to even more games free to play. You can go here and listen to the full interview at seven day cool down. The podcast also touches on Counter Strike:Global Offensive, EA ORIGIN, APPLE and….Ricochet….yeah…but no Half-Life 3 news.
